Migrating to DC 3 kV traction power supply for Dutch railways – A feasibility analysis

The Dutch railway is supplied with a DC 1 500 V system. In order to facilitate further growth, this system will need significant investments in substations. In 2001 the railway sector decided to continue with the DC 1 500 kV standard and re-evaluate the system performance again a decade later. ProRail started a quick-scan study in 2011 in which the actual existing options for power supply as described in European standards were put to the test. It led to new insights, which were not available back in 2001. A migration path to the DC 3 kV alternative was subsequently elaborated in 2013 and 2014. It was found that the current DC 1 500 V system can be improved in terms of efficiency but that a DC 3 kV alternative can also achieve a step change in energy savings as well as travel time savings and fitting with future timetables.
