Contact wire overheating during standstill below critical overlaps

Several incidents highlighted the problem of the catenary overheating in contact with the pantograph during standstill below critical overlaps. SNCF RESEAU led expertise of these incidents and everyone of them concluded at the contact wire breakage was due to its temperature. The current supply is especially critical when the train is stopped below an air-gap electrical overlap and the pantograph bridges both catenaries. Indeed, many catenary ruptures were recorded in these so-called critical overlaps. This problematic led to develop a software used now to simulate the contact wire heating. Remedies to avoid such failures are under testing in the network.
